Lay the cards out on a table and arrange the cards to the shape of your vegetable plot. The cards are designed to encourage companion planting. Cards are colour coded to show which plants benefit from being close to one another. Our companion groups are only suggestions for the purposes of the game, in reality, each plant has many companions.
There are 52 plant cards featuring the following plants: Asparagus, Basil, Beans, Beetroot, Borage, Broccoli, Calendula, Carrot, Cucumber, Dill, Garlic, Lettuce, Marigold, Marjoram, Nasturtium, Parsley, Peas, Potato, Pumpkin, Radish, Strawberries, Sunflower, Sweet Corn, Tomato and more.
All the plant cards are colour coded to indicate good companions. Further plant cards are in the pipeline.
There are 18 special cards featuring garden infrastructure, animals and insects: Aphids, Bees, Beetles, Birds, Ladybirds, Mice, Snails, Compost, Garden Shed, Green House and more.
The special cards have a positive or negative value and can be used for scoring extra points in a game.
We wanted the cards to have values that can be used for playing games. Of course there are other things we could have used, but we chose Days (from planting to harvest), height (when fully grown) and (crop) yield per square metre. The values used are approximate and relative. Actual values will depend on the soil, planting time, the weather, and many other factors.
Most of the images have been sourced from the Biodiversity Heritage Library, many from Wikimedia Commons. Some of the artwork we did ourselves, some needs to be improved, if you are an illustrator, we would love to talk with you. Contact.
First draft included just 36 cards, now we have 72. We will be preparing more cards. We are also considering cards featuring house plants, permaculture principles, trees, hydroponics, pond life, different regions etc. If you have ideas on what cards you’d like to see, please let us know.
Yes, the cards are available in a box from Floksy.com, click the link from our homepage.
Garden Match cards were designed and launched by Rubber Dragon, a small website design agency in Wiltshire in the UK. We love being out in the garden and initially created the cards to make it easier to companion plan our vegetable beds. Proceeds from this project will go towards development of more cards and our organic permaculture garden.
